As a specialist merchant, our aim is to always seek out small parcels and interesting projects so we were delighted to stumble across Cara Sur. It's the personal project of renowned winemaker, Sebastian Zuccardi, based in the remote Calingasta Valley in San Juan. Along with his wife and two friends, Sebastian made it his mission to rescue some incredible old vine vineyards (as pictured above) planted with native grapes and transform them into intriguing mountain wines with a sense of place.
At a full retail price of £26.99, it can be a tough sell online, they're the sort of wines you need to show at a tasting, but due to Covid we just haven't had the opportunity. They're wines for the enthusiasts among you, so if you like experimenting and trying different styles, then this is a great opportunity to try the Cara Sur wines at just £14.99.
Cara Sur Criolla
The Criolla grape variety was the first one brought to Argentina nearly 500 years ago by Spanish priests. Many incredible vineayrds have been abandoned in preference for planting Malbec, which for some winemakers, presents a huge opportunity.
This is a lovely bright, light-bodied red, with a bracing acidity and grape-skin chewiness to go with its unique flavour of redcurrant jelly and rosehip syrup, tamarind peel and orange pith.
Cara Sur Tinto Bonarda
One of the most impressive Bonarda's we've tried. This Italian grape thrives in Argentina and the Cara Sur Tinto is an excellent example of how good Bonarda can be. The 2018 is a full bodied wine with excellent concentration of dark red fruits, firm tannins and a long finish.
