Oz Clarke - Three Wine Men - tasting notes...

'This is lovely bright, light-bodied red, with a bracing acidity and grape-skin chewiness to go with its unique flavour of redcurrant jelly and rosehip syrup, tamarind peel and orange pith. But this wine isn't just about what it tastes like. You're drinking history here.

The Criolla grape variety was the first one brought to Argentina nearly 500 years ago by Spanish priests so that they could make their communion wine and remind themselves of the cool, high-vaulted cathedrals they'd left behind in Spain.

Well, there's nothing of that world of wafting vestments and heady incense in this. No, this is the young red wine the thirsty soldiers would have passed round the fire in a jug and downed in great draughts, as the mighty sides of beef browned, crackled and sweetened in the flames. There's a thought for a food pairing.'

  • Cara Sur is Sebastian Zuccardi's personal project, which he started with his wife Marce and friends, Nuria and Pancho. With a wealth of experience from his family winery, Familia Zuccardi, Sebastian has developed a range of hand-crafted mountain wines under the Cara Sur brand. The vineyards are located in Barreal in the Calingasta Valley, Province of San Juan at 1,500 metres above sea level; a place that has garnered much interest in recent years as having tremendous potential. The vines are trained in the time-honoured parral system and are over 50 years old. Sebastian is without doubt one of Argentina's leading lights in the industry and his wines show experience with a youthful, innovative twist.
